Bradley Ertaskiran is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Toronto-based artist Julia Dault. Primary Information is the artist’s third exhibition with the gallery.

“I was sick of beauty.” That was Louise Bourgeois in 1975, a sentiment that encapsulates Dault’s remarkable turn in a new body of work. Deeper, more complex colour palettes and compositions have displaced the bright, off-the-shelf colours that previously characterized her work. The result is a harder-won magnetism that exemplifies the richness and complexities of midlife, something Dault discusses in a short, limited-edition collection of essays published to coincide with the exhibition.

These new paintings explore the potential and varieties of abstraction, with printed mesh overlays, three-dimensional paint, spandex, and even some “straight” paintings that required no special tools, cutaways, or added materials. Dault has also transformed the gallery’s cavernous Bunker space using repurposed carpet that would otherwise have been discarded, creating a softened, welcoming environment.
